Don't Stress About Stress

The last six months have been a wild ride to say the least! From the COVID-19 pandemic and cancellations (the State Fair?!) to social unrest and the recent derecho that hit the Midwest with the aftermath that came with it, we can all agree 2020 will be a year to remember.

Though some of these events have led to positive changes like extra time with our favorite people, the chance to slow down, and a great excuse to get outside more, many of you have told me they’ve also lead to a major increase in stress. As we jump into back-to-school and/or back-to-the-office, big changes are happening again, and with major changes can also come with added stressors…which, unchecked, can take a major toll on our immune systems. I know – it doesn’t seem fair, right? Who wants to worry that worrying about stress will cause more stress?! The good news is, there are a lot of things you can do to help, and chiropractic is one of them! (You knew that was coming…😊)

Most people know that stress can play a role in causing illnesses, but in order to understand how chiropractic can help, it’s also important to know the why. I actually just read a really great article on this topic in a chiropractic journal…but it’s pretty nerdy stuff, so I’ll just give you an overview. 😊

One of the reasons that stress has such a harmful effect on health is that certain types of immune cells responsible for fighting things like bacteria, viruses, and fungi are sensitive to certain brain chemicals like stress hormones (cortisol, adrenaline, etc.) and won’t work when they come into contact with these chemicals. When stress hormones are released, they can slow the immune system response, which explains why the immune system suffers in people under chronic stress.(1)

Our body’s ability to adapt to internal and external health challenges is the key to overcoming the results of the physical, chemical and emotional stresses that block immune function and cause ailments.(2) One of the most important ways we do this is by making sure the nervous system is not being obstructed and the connections are good. This is because the nervous system controls and coordinates all of the functions of the body – including immune function.

By repairing obstructions in the nervous system (subluxations) through chiropractic, you are supporting your nervous system, which in turn supports your immune system and your body’s natural ability to deal with stress – pretty amazing, right?! This is where the team at Whole Health Chiropractic is ready to help YOU and your family live your best lives possible!

In addition to coming to visit me, now is also a great time to re-focus on nutrition, exercise and movement, getting enough sleep and focusing on self-care…it’s more than just a buzzword! Managing stress isn’t just about removing everything in your life that could potentially be stressful, it’s also creating space in your routine and giving your body the tools it needs to deal with stress better.

We don’t know what the rest of 2020 will bring, but we do know we can move through it happier and healthier TOGETHER. Call or text us to get your next appointment on the books…see you soon!
